Rangers are the thin Orange line between organised chaos and anarchy.
The Tankwa Town Rangers are specially trained volunteers from the AfrikaBurn community who volunteer their time at the Burn and during the year in service of the safety and well-being of the Burn community.
The Tankwa Town Rangers – also known as The Orange – act as non-confrontational community mediators and providers of reliable information, facilitators of public safety, and promoters of the eleven guiding principles upon which AfrikaBurn is based.
Rangers are never enforcers or the police. Rangers mediate, guide and advise.
Our event has accredited security that are hired for the event, and they are there to lock down the gate if required and back up the Rangers under extreme circumstances.
Within Tankwa Town, ‘law and order’ is maintained by two assumptions.
First, Radical Self Reliance means that each participant is responsible and proactive in terms of their own well-being and, in terms of Participation and Civil Responsibility, proactive in terms of the well-being of others.
Secondly, the volunteer-based Ranger organisation takes responsibility for working with our community to identify risks, dangers, hazards or harm reduction, combined with working with the various Burn departments to minimise, manage, or mediate them.
“Code of the Orange
I am a Burner, a Ranger, I am you.
For I will quietly listen to you And not judge you,
Nor will your spoken words be repeated
For I will remain ever silent, Ever vigilant, ever loyal.
And when our time together is done And you move on in the world,
Remember me with kind thoughts and tales,
For a time we were unbeatable,
Nothing passed among us undetected.
If we should meet again on another Burn or Playa,
I will be honoured to stand with you,
For I am a Ranger of the San Clan and together
We are guardians of the Principles.”
Be EPIC and volunteer with the Rangers!
